Last but not least

Five months ago, I was 230 pounds. I had moved halfway across the country from everyone and everything I knew. I was transitioning into my role of working full-time at home. I was unhappy with how much of my hard work I had undone by giving into the stress eating of the situation. The move, real estate issues, all of it, compounded to a person who was eating fried chicken over the sink at 10 pm in a kitchen full of boxes washing it down with my 6th beer.

Yesterday, I woke up, put on my too-big workout clothes (anyone wanna donate me size L workout clothes?) and went to Crossfit in the bleary haze of early dawn in October.

And almost as usual, I came in last for the workout. But I did it. I ran a whole mile, rowed 2000m (around 1.3 miles) and then ran another mile. I ran the whole thing. Everyone who finished before me waited for me and cheered me on that last hill, knowing this was my first time running this far straight. It was a great feeling.

So ya know what? I'm okay with being last because I'm still beating everyone else who isn't doing anything.

More importantly, I'm beating this chick right the frick out of me.

Yes, that was me on the right in 2000, at around 300-310 pounds.

That may be my name last, but I'm certainly not going to be last forever.

And I'm never going to feel least.

  1. Your transformation brings tears to my eyes. Seriously.

I first started reading your blog right before your move (hi, I'm new). The difference between you then and you now is ... I don't even know. It's amazing. You seem - happier isn't the word- you seem in control, you seem empowered, you seem determined. I wouldn't have said these things were missing when I first met ("met") you, but I see them now so clearly, it's startling.

  2. You don't know it, but you're a big piece of inspiration to me! I feel like I know you and I am very, very proud of you. Thanks for sharing all that you do.

I am militant about getting rid of clothes I no longer fit, but I do have a few size L things if you'd like - happy to send them, all the way from Canada.

  3. Liz and Tara - thank you both so much. I know it may sound like a total crock of shit, but knowing I have friends and support like this really keeps ME motivated, too,

And Tara, I will totally take anything you want to get rid of as long as you don't mind shipping from the great white north! I'm all about recycling clothes! E-mail me (primalmatriarch at gmail dot com)

  4. You've lost over 100 pounds! That's an Olsen and then some!

You just started CrossFit a couple of months ago and look at what you can already do. This time next year, you'll be at the top of that list.

  5. Holy CRAP. Damn, every time I think it's impossible to be more impressed by you, you go an do it again. I hope you're enormously proud of yourself for getting up every morning and just doing what needs to be done FOR YOU.
